Laptops & trolleys
Staying portable.
Laptop models change very frequently and so please contact Beebug for an up to date quotation. We normally recommend laptops from Toshiba as we have found them to have a good specification at a competitive price and to be very reliable.
Laptops for schools
A typical specification would be as follows: Fast Intel Core i3 or Core i5 processor, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb hard drive, 15.6” widescreen TFT display, N standard WiFi and Windows 7 Professional licence with 12 months warranty.
We increase the Toshiba warranty on all laptops that we sell to a full 3 years.
You will need a wireless network in order to fully benefit from the use of laptops at the school. We can install this for you whether you need WiFi in a single classroom or around the whole school.
NetBooks for schools
The NetBook is a low-cost alternative to a standard laptop.
Typically NetBooks have a smaller 10” screen, WiFi connection, a lower speed processor, no DVD drive and a Windows Home licence. In a school environment they are ideal for web browsing and accessing MLEs such as Fronter.
However, as NetBooks have the Home version of Windows they cannot log onto the school network in the usual way and so cannot have the usual Start menu and Desktop. Instead we would create a single account on each NetBook. All pupils using the NetBooks would log on with this one account and so would not have access to their home area on the Curriculum server.
Pupils will be able to access shared areas such as “Public” and they will be able to send work to the network printers. If they wish to save their work they would do so in Fronter, use the “Public” folder on the server or a USB pen drive. We can install any of your software on the NetBooks however we recommend that only a minimal selection is installed due to the lower performance of the Atom processor.
As supplied there is nothing in the NetBook to stop the pupils from deleting files or settings on the NetBooks. This would rapidly render them unusable. To address this Beebug have written a NetBook Security Lockdown program specifically for NetBooks. This program is now supplied free with all NetBooks that we supply or can be purchased at the cost of £10 per system for NetBooks purchased elsewhere.
In order to use NetBooks the school will need a wireless network. We can provide a quotation if you do not have wireless yet or if it needs to be upgraded (which may be necessary if using 15 or more in one classroom).
NetBooks vs Laptops
It is important to differentiate between a NetBook and a standard laptop. If you need full access to the school network and resources and need to run a wide range of programs then you should use a standard laptop. If you want to make a large number of computers available to pupils at low cost mainly for Internet access and Fronter then the NetBook is ideal.
Laptop Trolleys
We are able to supply laptop trolleys designed specifically for educational use from the UK’s leading manufacturers.
LapSafe produce some of the best built and most robust trolleys in the marketplace. Their original range featured the Mentor and Mini-Mentor range and they now also include a budget range called ClassBuddy.
LapCabby trolleys offer a lower cost alternative. The trolleys are designed to accommodate 16 or 32 laptop horizontally or vertically. The laptop AC adaptors are used to power the laptops and are kept at the rear of the trolley with access through a separate door. When stored horizontally each laptop has its own shelf.
Please contact us to discuss which trolley would be best for you and for a quotation.
